Listen, I’m never going to read Finnegans Wake. I read Dubliners. I read Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I even read Ulysses. And although the only reason I finished it is because I took an entire seminar devoted to it, I honestly loved it.
But have you looked at Finnegans Wake? Have you ever attempted to just finish reading the first page? I have a better chance of getting called up by the Mets than finishing that thing, and I bat ninth and play right field for my rec league softball team.
However, I am still really enjoying Stephen Crowe’s page-by-page illustrations of the book, even if I lack the knowledge to place them in their appropriate context. He has a way of capturing Joyce’s humor, as least what I recognize of his humor given my (admittedly limited) familiarity with the rest of his work. I’m partial to the saucy ones, as Joyce himself no doubt would have been.
